Wildman's Burrito Guide
Petoskey has had somewhat of a "revolving door" of Mexican restaurants. I've never really settled on one place, so here I have two choices:
1007 Spring St, Petoskey, MI (231) 487-1710
This is a "south branch" of a restaurant called Northwoods, located just north of Petoskey in the village of Oden. They have a great wet burrito, and the Southwoods location is much closer to the disc golf course - on the corner of US-131 and Sheridan.
Jose's Authentic Mexican Restaurant
309 Petoskey St, Petoskey, MI (231) 348-3299
Great food, good variety, small portions but delicious. "Authentic Mexican" is a very accurate description. Small dining area, but they do carry out orders. They do NOT have a "wet burrito" here, however.

River Road Sports Complex is located on River Road just south of the City of Petoskey. From US-131 about 1 mile south of the intersection of US-31; east on Sheridan to the bottom of the hill; right on Clarion. After about 1 mile on Clarion, continue straight after the stop sign. At this point Clarion changes its name to River Road. Another 1/2 mile south, River Road is on the left. When you enter the park, you will see a kiosk with Disc Golf information - just beyond this is Hole #1. The Complex has baseball diamonds and soccer fields, so it can be very busy when either of those events are taking place.
When I relocated to Petoskey in 1999, I immediately wanted to find out what was going on with disc golf. The nearest course then was in Traverse City, over an hour away. I met Tom Pluister, who was very active in disc golf and had been negotiating with the City to get a course installed. He was very instrumental in this process and got the approval to go ahead; I offered to help design the course, and in the end Tom liked all of my ideas for the design and basically turned that part of the project over to me. Tom has since made a few changes to some of the holes, but due to the growth of some of the plant life there I think these changes were necessary.
The course plays along a wide river valley situated between some large ridges that make the surrounding area very hilly; River Road itself is an exceptionally flat part of this area. The challenge in design was to make interesting holes in what was basically a flat open land, with some groves of trees and various hedges thrown in. The design utilizes these hedgerows extensively, which results in many blind holes. It's often a good idea to have someone with you your first time out here to help you spot. The jungle-like foliage has really grown up over the years, but the parks maintenance crew has done an excellent job in recent years of mowing large fairways. Some holes, like #5, #8 and #16 for example, have been made more difficult than the original design because of the rapid growth of trees and shrubs that did not exist when the baskets were first installed.
There are two tees on every hole (red = short, blue = long), and you will notice that some of the tees are concrete, some have rubber mats, and some are still natural. Locals have a fun way of playing a mix of the short and long holes - play concrete where it exists, short tees where it doesn't. Although there are 24 holes in the layout, it is possible to play shorter versions of the course and still end up roughly at the beginning. Playing the entire 24 from the long tees can take 2-3 hours. Some parts of the course do get muddy during the wet seasons; bug spray is also recommended, especially when you get deep into the jungle.
